In my last post, I talked about how I’ve been struggling with mental health stuff postpartum. Anxiousness can really rob a person of their normal daily functioning! Thankfully, there are natural solutions for mental health struggles. This includes essential oils for mental health and wellness.
Essential Oils I Use for Mental Health
I’ve been using doTERRA essential oils since 2013 – over seven years! They have impacted my health so positively. Something I love about essential oils is their versatility. Take frankincense, for example. It encourages a healthy inflammatory response, which means it is good for both the body and the brain!
Let’s dive into specific essential oils that I use for mental health and wellness.
doTERRA Adaptiv Blend
This has been my go-to essential oil blend since doTERRA released it last year. I was extremely excited when I heard about it and really looked forward to using it postpartum. Giving birth to a baby is such a joyful event, but that doesn’t mean postpartum is easy.
doTERRA’s Adaptiv roller ball blend contains wild orange, lavender, copaiba, spearmint, magnolia, rosemary, neroli, and sweetgum essential oils in a base of fractionated coconut oil. So it’s already diluted and can be rolled right onto your skin! I keep the roller ball bottle on my desk while working, and roll it onto my wrist whenever I need support. Sometimes anxious feelings hit me out of nowhere! I’m so glad I have this blend to help me in those times.
Ylang Ylang Essential Oil
This is an oil I began using frequently after it was suggested by my husband! He saw a Facebook ad for another essential oil brand which was touting an essential oil for stress relief. I took a look at the ingredients and it was simply ylang ylang!
doTERRA’s Adaptiv also comes in a 15 mL undiluted bottle, so during the day I like to diffuse that blend along with ylang ylang. This essential oil adds a deeper layer of calming. As I’m going to sleep, sometimes I like to diffuse ylang ylang with frankincense. This combo helps calm the brain and promote a healthy inflammatory response.
doTERRA Console Blend
doTERRA has an amazing line of emotional essential oils, and this is their comforting blend. It has ylang ylang in it, so there’s no need to add it. If I’m not diffusing ylang ylang and frankincense at night, I’ll use doTERRA’s Console instead.
With their emotional essential oil blends, I encourage others to look beyond the scope of the names. For example, previously I thought that this blend was for managing grief and sadness. But it really can be for anytime your heart and head need a consoling touch, whether or not you’re grieving something.
doTERRA Citrus Bliss Blend + Spearmint
Something I encourage others to do is mix blends with single oils. Or even two blends together! There’s no wrong way to mix essential oils, and we should always be experimenting to find new combinations.
I use doTERRA’s Citrus Bliss blend along with spearmint when I need a pick-me-up. This is great in the diffuser in the morning after waking, especially if you’re not a morning person! The citrus notes are refreshing and the spearmint is energizing yet not overpowering like peppermint can be. Plus, spearmint is safe for breastfeeding moms! (Peppermint can reduce milk supply in some women.)
doTERRA Balance Blend
This was one of doTERRA’s first emotion-focused blends. It has an earthy, woodsy scent and contains spruce, ho leaf, frankincense, blue tansy, blue chamomile, and osmanthus essential oils in a base of coconut oil.
I roll this on the bottoms of my feet and the back of my neck in the mornings. I also usually sniff the bottle before capping it. This blend is also wonderful in the diffuser.
doTERRA Adaptiv Supplement
This is actually a pill that you can take daily and is the perfect complement to doTERRA’s Adaptiv roller ball blend. The ingredients are: lavender, coriander, wild orange, fennel, and ahiflower essential oils, GABA, and sceletium extract.
As it says on the bottle, “this proprietary blend of ingredients helps when adapting to stressful situations and new surroundings.” That is the PERFECT description of what both military life and mom life are like! In the military life, we experience new surroundings every 2-3 years – sometimes sooner. With mom life, we face a lot of worries and stressors in parenting. I’m so thankful for tools like doTERRA’s Adaptiv line of products.

Essential oils are not the only game in town for mental health, but they are a key component. My mental wellness is so much better when I’m regularly incorporating my essential oils. I get it: sometimes when you feel poorly, it’s hard to find the motivation to reach for your oils or fill up the diffuser.
