What NOT to use on your hair
Have you ever thought about all the chemicals in your personal care products? When I first started on my health journey, I was mainly focused on diet. I was aware of essential oils and natural products, but I didn’t consider the negative impact of conventional products. Today we’re going to talk about safe hair care and a nourishing hair spray recipe! If you’re just here for the recipe, you can click the circle button above the photo and jump right to it.
Most women use at least a few hair care products. At the minimum we use shampoo and conditioner, and probably a few other items like hair gel and hair spray. Dry shampoo has become popular, as well as oils that can make the hair look more sleek. Unfortunately, most of these products contain artificial fragrance. (Synonyms are “parfum” and “aroma.”) I don’t even trust labels that say “natural fragrance” because I want to know the exact ingredients.
Opt for real essential oils and safer hair care products
Instead, I opt for real essential oils in my products. If the label doesn’t indicate exactly what essential oils it includes, I don’t buy it. In the recent past, I wasn’t 100% strict about this. But because I am trying to improve my fertility and balance my hormones, it has become a non-negotiable point for me. I have also been tested for skin allergies by a dermatologist and “fragrance” came back as one of my top three topical allergens. Furthermore, I often react negatively when smelling artificial fragrance.
While I do purchase some beauty products that contain real essential oils in them, my favorite brand for using essential oils therapeutically is doTERRA. You can read more about why I love them here. But the long and short of it is that I can trust their quality and purity. I know that what’s in the bottle is what the label says. So when I make my own personal care products, doTERRA essential oils are what I use.
Nourishing hair spray recipe with essential oils
That brings me to the topic of this blog post: a recipe for nourishing hair spray! Now, this isn’t your typical hair spray that makes your hair stiff and stay in place. I have yet to find that type of hair spray that isn’t aerosolized, doesn’t contain fragrance, and doesn’t cause me an allergic reaction. (Having an itchy face is the worst, even if your hair looks perfect!) Instead, this hair spray is to make your hair healthier and more naturally beautiful.
It contains just 4 ingredients: distilled water, and essential oils of lavender, geranium, and sandalwood. These are popular oils you will find in beauty products, as they are beneficial to the skin and the hair. It’s important to use distilled water because you don’t want to be adding extra minerals or chemicals to your hair from tap water. In our city here in Germany, the water is extremely hard because of the natural hot springs. Before I put a water filter on our shower head, I noticed my hair getting brittle and damaged. You will also need a 4 oz. spray bottle, either metal or tinted glass.
Create silky, smoother hair naturally!
I absolutely LOVE how my hair feels and smells after I use this! I wash my hair only every 2-3 days, so it helps with refreshing my hair in between shampoos. I also am so busy that I don’t take the time to wet and blow-dry my hair very often. Using this spray helps smooth out kinks and makes my hair feel smooth and silky.
Nourishing Hair Spray with Essential Oils
Ingredients
- 1 4 oz. spray bottle
- 3.5 oz. distilled water
- 5 drops lavender essential oil
- 5 drops geranium essential oil
- 3 drops sandalwood essential oil
Instructions
- Pour distilled water into the 4 oz. spray bottle, leaving a little room at the top of the bottle. Add the essential oils, screw on the spray cap, and shake before each usage. Mist your hair until lightly damp, and then brush and style as normal. If using alongside (all natural powder!) dry shampoo, apply and work in the dry shampoo to your roots first and then mist your hair, avoiding the top of your head.
